Governor Surges Into Lead in Race for U.S. Senate

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

BY BILL RUTTY AND JEREMY WALLACE
THE LAKELAND LEDGER

Gov. Charlie Crist’s decision to leave the Republican Party and run for the U.S. Senate as an independent appears to be paying off, a new Florida Poll shows.

Assuming Meek wins his primary and is in the race, Crist leads Rubio with 41 percent of the vote to Rubio’s 30 percent, with 12 percent going to Meek, according to the poll of 590 likely voters surveyed from July 24 to July 28. The poll has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

The Florida Poll was conducted by New York Times-owned Florida newspapers, including The Ledger, and the University of South Florida Polytechnic in Lakeland.

…for voters like Sarah Cross of Sarasota, the move is being received more as an act of defiance to the political status quo. Cross, a Democrat, said Crist’s move showed political bravery at a time when most politicians just go along to get along. “…once he had done something like that to put his own future at risk, I thought he really is trying to do the right thing.”

Barbara Abowitt, a retired teacher who lives in Bradenton, had a similar view. She said Crist’s switch showed he was willing to stand up to his party, not just in leaving the Republicans but also in vetoing legislation such as Senate Bill 6, the teacher tenure bill.

“He was willing to buck his party,” said Abowitt, who calls herself an independent voter.

Crist On Top In 3-Way Florida Senate Race

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist leads the three-way race for the U.S. Senate seat with 37 percent, followed by 32 percent for Republican Marco Rubio and 17 percent for Jeff Greene, the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. If U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek wins the Democratic primary, Crist’s lead would be 39 percent to 33 percent for Rubio and 13 percent for Meek.

In the Senate race, Crist’s lead is based on getting half the independent voters, about 20 percent of Republicans and about 40 percent of Democrats. His 53 – 37 percent voter approval of his job as Governor probably is a factor in his lead.

FACT CHECK: Charlie Crist Backs Tax Cut Extension

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

BY KEVIN DERBY
SUNSHINE STATE NEWS

Gov. Charlie Crist’s campaign team is rebutting comments made by the staff of Marco Rubio, who is a rival candidate in the U.S. Senate race.

A spokesman for Rubio pointed out the recent removal of content on Crist’s campaign site indicating that the governor supported tax cuts backed by President George W. Bush in 2001 and 2003.

“If Charlie Crist no longer supports making the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts permanent, he should tell Floridians immediately,” said Alex Burgos, a spokesman for Rubio.

The governor’s camp quickly responded.

“Gov. Crist unequivocally supports the extension of the 2001 and 2003 tax rates,” said Danny Kanner, a spokesman for the Crist campaign. “These are tough times, and we should not be raising taxes on any Americans.”

The tax cuts will expire at the end of the year unless reauthorized by Congress.

Factcheck.org: Rubio Misfires on Crist’s Health Care Shift

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

BY MICHAEL MORSE
FACTCHECK.ORG

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist’s position on the new federal health care law has shifted, but not as much as Marco Rubio’s latest ad says.

In the highly competitive race for the U.S. Senate, Rubio — the presumptive GOP nominee — released an ad July 22 titled “The People,” which claims: “Charlie Crist now says he supports Obamacare.” That’s not true.

…(Crist) says that “repeal must be accompanied by a responsible substitute.”

Charlie Crist Attracts Broad Support

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

POLITICO.COM

Rep. Darryl Rouson, an African-American Democratic state lawmaker who has been a friend of the Crist family for two decades, acknowledged he has taken flak for publicly backing the governor’s candidacy. But he also stressed that many black voters will quietly pull the lever for Crist without ever admitting it.

“Frankly, the Democratic party can’t scream to high heavens, because so many Democrats across the spectrum are also supporting Crist. So they have to be careful who they crucify. His record is not so bad among black voters. He’s appointed black judges. He just appointed two black members to the Public Service Commission. He put teeth in the Civil Rights Act as attorney general,” said Rouson.

“They’re not going to vote for Rubio or for a billionaire who bet on the housing crash,” he continued.

FACT CHECK: My Position, The Obama Health Care Bill

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

FACT CHECK: Recent reports in the media have confused my position on the Obama health care bill.

The Obama health care bill was too big, too expensive, and expanded the role of government far too much. Had I been in the United States Senate at the time, I would have voted against the bill because of unacceptable provisions like the cuts to the Medicare Advantage program. But being an independent, I have the freedom to be an honest broker for the people of Florida without regard for political party, and the reality is this: despite its serious flaws, the Obama health care bill does have some positive aspects.

Repeal must be accompanied by a responsible substitute — repeal without passage of a substitute law protecting those with pre-existing conditions, closing the prescription drug donut hole for seniors, and allowing parents to keep their children on their insurance coverage until age 26 would be wrong. While I would not have supported the legislation, we have to recognize the positive components and work together across party lines to make our health care system more affordable for both consumers and the government.

This debate must not be about political posturing; it must be about protecting the people of Florida and America, and I intend to do that hard work when I get to the United States Senate.

Crist Looking Good

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

BY TOM JENSEN
PUBLIC POLICY POLLING

Thanks mostly to support from Democrats Charlie Crist is the leader in the Florida Senate race. In the most likely match up against Kendrick Meek he gets 35% to 29% for Marco Rubio and 17% for Meek. His lead expands with Jeff Greene as the Democratic nominee. In that scenario Crist gets 38% with Rubio still at 29% and Greene at only 13%.

Crist has become the de facto Democratic nominee and that’s where most of his support is coming from. He’s currently getting 44% of Democrats in the Meek match up, along with 40% of independents and 23% of Republicans. Crist has increased his support across the board since PPP last polled this race in early March. At that time, while still a Republican, he got just 27% to 34% for Rubio and 25% for Meek. He’s now doing 12 points better with Democrats, 5 points better with independents, and somewhat surprisingly even 5 points better with Republicans.

Crist Uses His Old Party as a New Foil

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

BY PETER WALLSTEN
WALL STREET JOURNAL

“So many of the elected politicians in Washington seem to be shackled by the fear of a primary,” Mr. Crist said in an interview last week in this seaside city, where he attended a briefing on the effects of the Gulf oil spill. As an independent, Mr. Crist said, he is free to speak his mind without worrying about the most ideological voters.

“It’s liberating,” Mr. Crist said. “It’s a lot of fun, and I’m convinced it’s what the people want.”

Charlie Is Out To Show That Centrists Can Win

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

BY ARIAN CAMPO-FLORES
NEWSWEEK

Not long ago, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist seemed like a dead pol walking. Tea Party favorite Marco Rubio was thrashing him in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate. Crist’s 30-point lead had swung to a 30-point deficit; funding was drying up, as were endorsements.

“He’s deader than the day before yesterday,” former state GOP chair Tom Slade told the St. Petersburg Times in late April. “I don’t think there’s any way in the world he can rehabilitate himself.” Crist’s collegial centrism, the conventional wisdom held, had become anachronistic at a time when angry right-wing populism had overtaken his party.

Yet here we are, less than three months later: Crist, now running as an independent, leads Rubio by almost 5 points, and he’s ahead of potential Democratic opponents by much more, according to a Real Clear Politics average of polls.

The stunning reversal raises a possibility with wider implications: “In this national environment of very polarized politics,” says Daniel Smith, a political-science professor at the University of Florida, “voters may be interested in more moderate candidates.”

Charlie Leads in Money Race for U.S. Senate

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

Gov. Charlie Crist has $8.2 million in the bank for his independent Senate campaign, compared to $4.4 million for the leading Republican, Marco Rubio.

BY BETH REINHARD
MIAMI HERALD

Gov. Charlie Crist raised $1.8 million for his independent U.S. Senate campaign in the past three months, trailing Republican Marco Rubio but conserving millions of dollars more for the last few months of the campaign.

Rubio reported a monster-sized $4.5 million haul earlier this week — replacing Crist as Florida’s fundraising champ. Still, Crist’s latest donations were up from the $1.1 million he collected in the previous three months before he ditched the Republican Party.

“I couldn’t be more delighted. It’s uncharted territory,” said Crist, who leads the polls.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist holds a narrow edge over Republican Marco Rubio in a three-way Senate race dominated by economic worries, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday.

Crist, who left the Republican Party to run as an independent after Rubio mounted a primary challenge against him, leads Rubio 35 percent to 28 percent. Democrat Kendrick Meek trails with 17 percent less than four months before the November election for the open Senate seat.

Crist holds a similar 34 to 29 percent edge over Rubio in a three-way race against Democrat Jeff Greene, who is locked in a tough party primary fight with Meek. The Florida primary will be held August 24.

Democrats Quietly Line Up in Crist’s Corner

TAMPA – You may never have heard of Peggy Land, unless you’re a Tampa Democratic political insider.

She’s a proverbial little old lady in tennis shoes, but along with her late husband John, she has also been a faithful Democratic political donor – some $20,000 to the party and its candidates over the last decade or so, plus more from fundraisers in their home, and none to Republicans.

So who is Land backing in the U.S. Senate race?

Gov. Charlie Crist, a former Republican running as a no-party candidate.

Independence Day

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Our nation’s Independence Day is a tremendous occasion to celebrate the greatness of America and all she represents. As Americans, we are blessed with a history, freedoms, and opportunity unlike any other nation in the world.

As we observe our nation’s independence, we remember the strength and fortitude of our founders who stood strong against tyranny and fought for freedom. America is a beacon of hope, liberty and courage for all. These ideals are what inspired my grandfather to come to this country from Cyprus, Greece, over a century ago.

On the Fourth, we must be sure to continue to honor the courage of those who fought for and continue to defend our freedom at home and abroad. Let us show our gratitude for the faithful service of the men and women of our Armed Forces as we embrace the enduring principles of freedom, hard work and determination that will make our nation strong for generations to come. Their bravery and sacrifice makes it possible for us to enjoy our liberties.

I wish all Floridians and their families a safe and blessed holiday. May God continue to bless our nation and the great state of Florida.

Charlie Crist’s Declaration of Independence

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

goodBWT_CC_SEN-10602

My decision to run for the United States Senate as a candidate with no party affiliation in many ways says more about our nation and our state than it does about me. As someone who’s served the people in Florida for more than fifteen years, from the state Senate to the Governor’s Mansion, I can confirm what most Floridian’s already know: unfortunately, our political system is broken.

I was never one who sought to hold elected office to demagogue or point fingers. For me, public service has always been about putting the needs of our state and our people first, and every single day, as your servant, I have tried to do exactly that. Frankly, for me it’s always been that simple. I haven’t supported an idea because it’s a Republican idea or a Democratic idea. I support ideas that I think are good ideas, for the people. For the people. And I’ve always found that that’s exactly what the people believe, too.

They’ve had enough of political fighting; they’re tired of the game of name calling and the politics of destruction; and my friends I know they want progress and not gridlock; they are tired of things not getting done for them, for you. They want someone that’s more concerned about standing up for them than standing up for special interest or party.

They look at Washington and they don’t like what they see. They don’t like what they see from politicians, they don’t like what they see from bureaucrats, they don’t like what they see from the gridlock. They have a hope, and they have a concern, and they have a desire to elect people that represent them, that represent you, and fight for you first every single day. That’s why I’m running for the United States Senate; that’s why I’m running for this office: for you.

Frankly, for me the easiest thing I could have done was to run for re-election as governor. But for me it’s never been about doing what’s easy. It’s been about doing what’s right for the people first. And my friends, you know I’ve made some tough decisions as your governor, and they all haven’t been popular, but I’ve done them because I think they’re what’s right for the people and right for our state. Whether it’s off shore drilling – and stopping it, whether it’s fighting for our teachers and our children in education, or expanding our hours for people to be able to vote back in 2008, whatever the issue might be.

Some didn’t like that. But I believe in democracy and that the people have the right to choose, always. Now I could’ve chosen to stay in the primary. But frankly for me, it’s your decision. It’s not one club’s decision, or another, or even a club within that club. It is a decision too important. It is a decision for all the people of Florida to be able to make. That is why we go straight to November. We give you the chance to make that decision. It’s your decision to make. Now, I know this is unchartered territory. I am aware of that. And I am aware that after this speech ends, I don’t have either party helping me. I need you. I need you, the people, more than ever. And I guarantee you, I am counting on you, I am counting on you, and I believe in you. And you can believe in me. And I’ll be with you forever, forever.

I think we need a new tone in Washington. I love my country. I love the fact that we are the land of the free and home of the brave. And that we have principles that are supposed to be stood for. And at the end of the day, we can agree to disagree without being disagreeable. Our country is better than what we see up there. I know it in my heart. I feel it in my soul. I prayed to my God about this. More than I usually talk to the Father. And I can tell you from the bottom of my heart, I know we’re doing the right thing. It’s the right thing for America. It’s the right thing for Florida. It’s the right thing for the people.

We have to work hard. We have to win. We have to be organized. We have to take this thing. God bless you and God bless Florida. Thank you so much.
